My busy day on Sunday
On Sunday I will take to the streets of London to take part in the London Marathon finally being held in full for the first time since April 2019.
After a long wait and a long summer of training I am looking forward to Sunday morning almost as much as I am looking for to it all being finished!!!
I love the challenge of the marathon which tests my body and brain but in order to deliver some actual benefit from running for far too long I will be running on behalf of Hope Gardens and I’m hoping you can help me help them establish a new day care centre
Thank you!
James
How will your sponsorship makes a difference?
Hope Gardens runs 5 day care centres in Kerala and Tamil Nadu in Southern India. As a direct result of the pandemic there has been huge demand for addition provision. We have highlighted 2 new communities where children are in need of support.
Day care centres provide a safe space for children to come and learn while their families are working. Programmes are run in a variety of spaces indoors and out.
Typically the jobs that the children's parents do are low paid, often ad hoc and they work long hours on plantations or on construction sites.
These programmes are essential as they provide care for the children late into the night where children may otherwise be left to fend fo themselves. On average there are 35 children at each of these centre are provided a safe space with electricity for study, snacks, games and compassion. With no secure jobs since March 2020 many families have fallen into acute poverty.
By sponsoring James to run the marathon you can help him support our Hope for Children programme which includes;
Who are Hope Gardens?
For the last 20 years Hope Gardens has been working in Tamil Nadu and Kerala with the sole purpose of enhancing the lives of those living in poverty and bringing hope to those most in need.
Our Hope for Children programme provides child and student sponsorship, runs a school for children with disabilities and day care centres. The projects we support are entirely the vision of local, poor Indians who have taken responsibility for setting up, running and leading the work. We believe this is by far the most effective model of development.
What is the situation in India?
Since March 2020 Hope Gardens has been working with the most vulnerable families to try and heal the scars of the pandemic. Our medical centre has been distributing vaccines, our team of pastors have set up 20 food banks and our children's team have been running day care programmes to teach children in small communities in line with the local restrictions.
At the moment only children in years 9-12 are at school, everyone else is remotely learning however not all children have been able access remote learning or been able to engage with it for 18 months so there are huge gaps in children's education. We hope to support families by enabling them to go to work while taking care of their children, tutoring and providing fun sporty activities.
